Michigan questionnaires sent out for probate jury duty

In Midland County, Michigan, thousands of people were sent questionnaires that relate to jury duty. This form is known as a Juror Qualification Questionnaire. It does not mean that the people who get it have been selected to serve, but it is a step in that direction.

In order to determine whom to send the paperwork to, a computer was used to pick out names. These names were taken from a master list of everyone with an ID that was issued by the state, such as a driver's license. Those who get the document will be under consideration, and they could be chosen for jury duty on or after the first of October, during that fiscal year.

Ten days are given to those with the questionnaires, and they then have to turn them back in.

If selected, people could be chosen to sit for probate cases, along with other types of cases. Whether they will work on probate cases or criminal cases will not be determined until they are needed. They could also serve in either circuit or district court.

After they get the documents back, a review team will begin to sort through all of the individuals who responded to take those who cannot serve out of the general pool. This could include people who are not able to speak English, for example, or who are unqualified in some other fashion.

When it comes to probate litigation, a jury may be used to determine if assets are being divided up in a fair fashion that conforms to the person's desires. Anyone entering into litigation should know that a jury of their peers could have an impact on the outcome.
